Joshua & Sons watches - skeletal silverThe market for designer watches is pretty competitive these days, as well, so if you want to enter the market and catch someone’s attention, you’d best have something amazing up your sleeve. Joshua & Sons watches have done that by creating oversized, colorful watches that have a sense of style that’s inspired by both American urban trends and what they call “London vogue.”

It’s an odd mix that creates some truly unusual designs in the company’s lineup.  These timepieces are certainly going to be polarizing; you’re either going to love these watches or you’re going to hate them.  Regardless, they’re certainly eye-catching, reasonably well built and certainly affordable.  If you’re looking for a designer timepiece that’s going to get people talking but is still a bit off the beaten path, you should definitely give Joshua & Sons watches a look.

Summary

Joshua & Sons Watches Build Quality

The build quality is good, but not exceptional.   Most of the models in the product line use mineral crystal to protect the watch face, which, while good, is not as scratch resistant as the more expensive sapphire crystal.  Cases are mostly stainless steel, and water resistance for many models is rated at 50 meters or better.  Since these watches aren’t really made for diving, that water resistance should meet most buyers’ needs.  Crowns are push-pull, rather than screw-down, but one usually sees the latter only in watches that are far more expensive than Joshua & Sons watches.

Movements

Most of the movements are of the quartz electronic variety, and they appear to be sourced from Miyota (Citizen) in Japan.  They make a solid movement, so these watches should be fairly reliable.  A few models have automatic movements, we suspect that these are also sourced from Japan, but we can’t be sure about that.

Innovation

You won’t find much in the way of technical innovation in the Joshua & Sons watches lineup; these are watches designed with style in mind, rather than in bringing new features to the market.   They leave that to the more expensive Swiss firms and concentrate instead on taking tried-and-true technology and putting it in an attention-grabbing case.

Styling and Features

Joshua & Sons watches - brown and goldStyling is where Joshua & Sons watches truly stands out in a crowded marketplace.  Bright colors, oddly-shaped cases, and truly strange-looking displays seem to be the hallmark of the brand.  Most model are for men, though there are a few models for women.  Displays are all analog, but you’ll find chronograph features, rectangular faces, oval faces, multiple dials in odd locations and oversized dials.

A few models have decorative crystals, so they’ll be suitable for evening wear, and sports models have rubber straps and easily visible dials.   As the target price point for Joshua & Sons watches is relatively modest, you won’t find gold or actual diamonds, but their models with crystals are attractive at a much lower cost.  These are designed for young, hip, and style-conscious buyer who want something different when it comes to a wristwatch.  In that, they’ve certainly succeeded.

Care and Maintenance

Care and maintenance should be minimal, as nearly all of their models use highly reliable Japanese-made quartz electronic movements.  You’ll need to have the battery replaced every two years or so, but aside from that, you should have few concerns regarding maintenance.  As with all quality timepieces, you should store your watches in a cool, dry place and keep them away from extremes of temperature or strong magnetic fields.  With proper care, your watch should run well for many years to come.

Joshua & Sons Watches Warranty

Joshua & Sons watches - blue dialThe warranty  is somewhat below average; the company warrants their product for one year from the date of purchase against defects in materials and craftsmanship.  Most watchmakers offer a two year warranty, so this one is a bit of a disappointment.  It might be possible to purchase an extended warranty from your dealer at the time of purchase.  If this interests you, be sure to inquire when you’re buying your watch.

Prices

As designer timepieces go, you’ll find that prices range from inexpensive to moderate.  List prices seem to run from about $150 to about $700, with most models falling into the middle of that range.  For the price, they’re well built and attractive and we’ve seen some models discounted to well below $100, so you might be tempted to buy more than one if you find that you like the styling.   There’s little in the way of collector interest in Joshua & Sons watches, so don’t buy expecting to see them rise in value or become collector’s items over time.

Where to Buy

Joshua & Sons watches - black dialYou can find the brand for sale at many department stores and perhaps a few jewelry stores, as well.  You can also find them for sale on the Internet, and that will likely present your best chance to buy at a discount.  We’ve seen them discounted more than 80% at some online retailers, so you’ll definitely want to take a look if you’re interested in bargains.

Joshua & Sons Watches Summary

With their oversized cases, outrageous styling and bright colors, these watches obviously aren’t for everyone.  If you like elaborate mechanical complications or traditional styling, you’d best look elsewhere.  If you like the urban-inspired styles, the unusual designs and the eye-catching colors, then their offerings will be right up your alley. They’re reasonably well built and certainly affordable, making Joshua & Sons watches a good place to start for anyone looking for a designer watch on a budget.
