Rolex Submariner Date – Best Watch for Investment?

Rolex Submariner Date – Best Value Over Time?

dive watch - Rolex Submariner greenMost people who buy designer watches aren’t interested in anything but a timepiece that may also add some style to their wardrobe.  There’s nothing wrong with that; people are free to buy watches for any reason they like, and telling the time is their primary function.

If it makes you look like a snappy dresser, too, that’s a nice side effect.  But some watch buyers are interested in making money, or at least getting the best bang for their buck.  After all, it’s possible that in time, you may wish to part with your watch in order to buy another one, and if that’s the case, then you want to buy a luxury watch that will offer you the best return on your initial investment.

That watch may be the Rolex Submariner Date, though many other models in the Rolex line also offer good value over time.  Why?  There are a number of reasons:

  • Brand recognition – Rolex is a long-established brand that is well known among the public.  People are aware that they’re good watches, and they’re also aware that they’re expensive watches.  Both of these are good for investors, as the brand is likely to be as highly regarded a decade from now as they are today.
  • There’s huge interest in vintage Rolex watches.  Yes, they’re selling well off of the assembly line, but the company changes their products from time to time, and collectors tend to gravitate to older models.
  • Rolex watches, especially those models that are made especially for harsh conditions, tend to hold up well over time.  That means that a ten year old example of the Submariner Date is likely to look as good and run about as well as a brand new one.  That’s important to investors.

Rolex Submariner 18k yellowThe Rolex Submariner hasn’t had a lot of changes over the years, and those changes that have been made are relatively minor ones.  They’ve increased the water resistance; the current models are good to 300 meters or so, which is going to be good enough for most everyone.

Pricing can vary widely, as you can buy a Rolex Submariner with a stainless steel case or a gold case, or a case that combines the two.  Obviously, the cold case models are going to cost a great deal more, and they can run as high as $25,000.  On the other hand, if you buy one today, you’re likely to be able to recoup most of that price, or perhaps even turn a profit, if you want to sell it a year or a decade from now.

In the meantime, of course, you’ll be the proud owner of a fashion icon, as well as an attractive, durable, rugged timepiece that you can safely take diving.

We realize that most people don’t buy watches for the purpose of reselling them, nor should you.  It’s usually hard to pick winners and losers when it comes to long-term appreciation.  If you’re going to buy a luxury watch, you should be buying one because you like it, not because you’re looking to make money in the long term.  There are probably better forms of investments than timepieces, unless you’re buying super-high end limited edition items.

Still, it’s never a bad thing if your watch appreciates in value, and a Rolex Submariner Date is a good example of a watch that holds its value well.
